World Leaders Demand in UN End of U.S. Blockade Against Cuba

Latin American, Caribbean, African and Asian leaders have called for an end to the U.S. blockade against Cuba at the UN General Assembly, which is today holding its third day.

As in previous years, the group of Heads of State and Government of the main UN deliberative body welcomes leaders from several parts of the world who demand Washington to lift an economic, commercial and financial blockade in force for over half a century.

The Ecuadorean President, Lenin Moreno, slammed U.S. blockade and harped on the need to respect sovereignty and non-interference.

'If we continue attacking and blockading States and peoples, as it is happening with Cuban people, we will never be able to attain a real freedom and democracy,' he warned.

The African Presidents, Jacob Zuma of South Africa and Hage Geingob of Namibia, raised their voices to defend the end of the unilateral sanctions against Cuba, termed the main obstacle for its development.

Zuma expressed disappointment over U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to reverse measures aimed at reducing the scope of the blockade.

In turn, the Guyanese President, David Arthur Granger, described the U.S. siege as unfair since it thwarts the right to development.

Likewise, the President of Nauru, Baron Divavesi Waqa, urged the United States to lift the sanctions applied and intensified by the last 11 administrations in the White House.

On Tuesday, Bolivian President, Evo Morales and Costa Rican President Luis Guillermo Solis had called for the end of the U.S. blockade against Cuba during the opening day of the 72th session of the UN General Assembly.

Morales stressed that the economic, commercial and financial blockade is an unfair and failed policy, and urged Washington to compensate for the damage caused by its unilateral measures against Cuban government and people.
