Havana Stands Up to Devastating Damage

Havana stands today facing the damages caused by a tornado described here by the experts as devastating, according to the most advanced classification, the improved Fujita Scale.

The director general of the Institute of Meteorology of Cuba, Celso Pazos, explained today The tornados are classified by the Improved Fujita Scale, which evaluates its magnitude from the damages caused, Pazos added last night in the television program Mesa Redonda.

All the labor and social sectors collaborate in the recovery of the affected areas, where the damages reach enormous proportions.

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said today that the capital of the island will recover with the collective effort of the severe damages caused by a tornado in several municipalities on Sunday.

By offering details about the phenomenon, Director Pazos pointed out that he traveled around 11.5 kilometers in 16 minutes, at a speed of more than 40 kilometers per hour, moving east-northeast of the capital.

He also said that the most damaged municipalities were Guanabacoa, Ten de Octubre, San Miguel del Padrón and Regla.

Four people died, while the number of injured reached 195, official sources said.

A total of one thousand 238 is the number of homes affected by the tornado that shook this capital, said today the vice president of the Council of Public Administration in Havana, Juan Montalvo.

Montalvo said that figure includes partial and total landslides, as well as effects on sectors of the national economy.
