Featured Granma-Cerro Pelado Wrestling Tournament: Without brilliance, Cuba prevails

Women’s wrestling round-robin tournament in Cerro Pelado. Some wrestlers fighting at their best, opportunity to scout some of the opponents for the upcoming Central American and the Caribbean Games to be held in Baranquilla are some of the consequences of the event led by Cuban wrestlers with 190 points.

Six gold medals and two silver medals in eight divisions is the final result of the Cuban delegation. Mexico and Venezuela achieved 60 points while Germany (50) and the US followed Cuba in that order.

It is important to highlight that some of the best US athletes decided to participate last week in a tournament held in Sweden that awarded points for the world ranking.

Thus, Leanne Mendoza beat her two opponents in the 50kg division. She defeated Cuban Yusnelys Guzman. Experienced Venezuelan Betzabeth Arguello swept the 53kg as she defeated Amanda Hernandez.

Laura Herin prevailed over Yaineli Sanz in the only 55kg combat while Mexican Alejandra Romero won in one of the most interesting divisions: 57kg. She managed to fight hard in every combat with a final line of 3 wins and 1 loss.

Cubans dominated the other divisions.

Dayselis Rodriguez was unbeaten all the way in the 59kg. Yacqueline Stornell —2 wins and 1 loss— prevailed in the 62kg. Yudaris Sanchez won her four combats in the 68kg whereas Milaimys Marin was outstanding in the 76kg.

The event helped trainer Filiberto Delgado to have a better understanding of his athletes regarding individual performances. The Pan-American qualifying tournament to be held in the Sports City Coliseum is around the corner.

This event will be a notable test. Scouting will be paramount as most of teams will bring their best athletes to Havana. Therefore, better and objective profiles of athletes will be made. So far, Delgado and his staff foresee two titles for Cuba in Barranquilla.

Men’s wrestling tournament kicks off today at 10am. Julio Mendieta’s team will fight hard. Turkey, US, Germany, among other nations, will be our most fierce rivals.
