The Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) has ratified the inclusion of the Cuban Marabana event in the world calendar for 2019, to be held on November 17, the local press reported today.
In the recent congress held in Estonia, AIMS confirmed the continuity of the Cuban competition for next year within its official program.
The structure of this entity has made it possible for Cuba to organize the event according to the interests of coinciding in a near date with the celebration of the anniversary of the Village of San Cristobal in Havana, with the proclamation of its historic centre as a World Heritage Site and in regards to November 19, Day of Physical Culture and Sport.
Carlos Gattorno, Director General of the Marabana-Maracuba project, specified that since the ratification of the competition for 33 consecutive years, it has demonstrated the stability and seriousness in the fulfillment of the international commitments of the organizers, tour operators and runners who have free access to the world calendar.
He also emphasized that participants can schedule their presence in the marathon with the very special incentive of participating in the events celebrating the 500th anniversary of the foundation of Havana.
Gattorno also announced that 951 foreign runners from 43 countries have already officially registered for Marabana 2018, to be held on November 18, a number expected to increase in the coming days.
