Trump Under Investigation for Firing FBI Director James Comey

“I am being investigated for firing the FBI director by the man who told me to fire the FBI director! Witch Hunt,” Trump wrote on Twitter.

Reports say Trump may have been referring to the Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who wrote a memo recommending Comey's firing and also appointed a special counsel to oversee the investigation into Russia's involvement in the 2016 presidential election.

The tweet on Friday was the first official confirmation by Trump that he himself is under investigation.

The Washington Post, citing unidentified officials, has reported that the special counsel Robert Mueller is investigating Trump for a possible obstruction of justice as part of the widening probe, which Trump previously blasted as “phony.”

Before his dismissal, Comey confirmed the FBI had been investigating alleged Russian government efforts to interfere in the election, including any links between Trump's campaign and Moscow.

Trump, who hired his own lawyer last month regarding the probe, kept up his criticism of the investigation.

“After seven months of investigations and committee hearings about my ‘collusion with the Russians,’ nobody has been able to show any proof. Sad!” Trump wrote.

"Despite the phony Witch Hunt going on in America, the economic and jobs numbers are great. Regulations way down, jobs and enthusiasm way up!"

In the statement Thursday evening, Rosenstein warned that U.S. citizens should be skeptical about anonymous allegations.

“Americans should exercise caution before accepting as true any stories attributed to anonymous ‘officials,’ particularly when they do not identify the country — let alone the branch or agency of government — with which the alleged sources supposedly are affiliated,” he said.
