The French Government criticized that the European Union (EU) decided to implement sanctions against Venezuela, and was favored negotiation as the path to solve the conflict in that country, the news agency Europa Press reported today.

According to statements by diplomats quoted by the news agency, the French stance is shared by the majority of the EU member states, which 'are not very much in favor' of applying sanctions against Caracas.

The article read that such approach contravenes the content of a communique issued yesterday by EU, ignoring the constitution of a Constituent Assembly in Venezuela, despite the overwhelming support by the Venezuelan people to that initiative, shown in the referendum held on Sunday.

The source referred to recent publication of a letter sent in early July by President Emmanuel Macron to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, in which the French president expressed his willingness to facilitate negotiations through talks.

French Ambassador to Venezuela Romain Nadal published yesterday on Twitter that he was willing to support the efforts in favor of understanding between the sides involved.
