Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel will meet in Berlin on Saturday to discuss the consequences of the sanctions imposed by the United States, the Kremlin reported.

Early this month, the Donald Trump administration informed that new sanctions against Russia might come into force on August 22, considering that Moscow is responsible for plotting a chemical attack on the former intelligence agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia.

On several occasions, Moscow has denied its involvement in that attack and has denounced the lack of concluding evidence and convincing explanations on several aspects of the case, and the media and political campaigns promoted by the United States and the United Kingdom.

The sanctions are structured to be implemented in two stages, the first of which includes the prohibition of licenses to send some products to Russia, including electronic devices.

The second stage of sanctions would cut off almost all trade between the two countries, would reduce bilateral relations, and flights by the Russian company Aeroflot to the United States might be suspended.

Another issue to be discussed at the Putin-Merkel meeting is the strengthening of strategic cooperation and projects like the Nord Stream-2 gas pipe, which will supply Russian gas to Germany through the Baltic and which the United States opposes.

The two leaders will also review the situation in Syria and Ukraine, and will boost bilateral relations, the spokesman for the Russian Presidency, Dmitri Peskov, told reporters.
