AMLO reiterated his decision to invite Venezuelan President Maduro for his inauguration ceremony along with his support for self-determination.

Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO), the president-elect of Mexico, Saturday reiterated his position on inviting Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro for his inauguration ceremony on Dec.1. AMLO also affirmed that his government will respect “self-determination, non-intervention” ensuring that his country wants friendship with everyone.

Since AMLO’s invitation to Maduro became known, the president-elect received widespread criticism from Mexican and Venezuelan opposition parties.

However, since October, AMLO had vocalized his decision of maintaining a policy of friendship with all governments and peoples of the world. He reaffirmed his position during a press conference Saturday while rejecting criticisms of his decision to have the leader of Bolivarian Revolution at his initiation ceremony.

"We have no reason to be involved in matters that do not correspond to us, the best thing is neutrality, we will respect self-determination, non-intervention, peaceful settlement of disputes, cooperation for development and we want friendship with all," said the Mexican politician.

"Every day is Venezuela, every day is Venezuela. (...) The case of Venezuela, I do not know, fifty, sixty dead, it is very unfortunate what is happening, but in our country we have fifty or sixty dead per week, and it leads, by impact of the media, to a Hitler strategy, because the lie that is repeated many times becomes truth, the handling and the manipulation stun,” AMLO said during an interview in 2017.

AMLO will take office on Dec.1. He was elected in July with 53.19 percent of votes. The inauguration will see the presence of the Bolivian President Evo Morales and Cuban singer-songwriter Silvio Rodriguez.
