Mexico: Teachers on Strike for Missing Students

Teachers with the National Coordination of Education Workers (CNTE) declared an indefinite strike on Thursday to demand justice for the missing students in Guerrero. The teachers announced the strike on Wednesday during a protest to condemn the murder of six people in Iguala last September 26-27. Protestors also denounced the disappearance of 43 students.

The teachers made the announcement at a protest that took place in Chilpancingo, Guerrero. Approximately 10,000 people participated among them students, teachers, as well as a diverse array of members from civil society. They demand that the missing students be returned safely and that those responsible be charged.

Yesterday, 15,000 people protested in Iguala as well. The march was led by the missing students' families.

In a simmilar way, demonstrations took place in other parts of the country. Thousands of members of the Zapatista National Liberation Army (EZLN) marched in San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas. Likewise, marches were held in Guanajuato, Sonora, Nuevo Leon, Morelos, Puebla and Veracruz.

Internationally, protests were held outside Mexican embassies in Argentina, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Germany, Spain, United States, Norway and the United Kingdom.
