The United States representation once again imposes an issue outside the UN Security Council agenda when a meeting on the current situation in Venezuela is requested.

This is the second session on the issue the US delegation has been requested this year, with veto power in that security body because it is a permanent member.

Diplomatic sources have confirmed that Under Secretary-General for Political Affairs of the United Nations Rosemary Di Carlo expects to offer an information summary and the debate will be open so the Security Council country members can participate.

Under the United States pressures, that body addressed the situation in Venezuela on January 26, despite the fact that several members expressed their rejection and considered that the matter should not be discussed as it does not represent a threat to international peace and security.

On that occasion, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, in a frank position of interference, called to ignore President Nicolas Maduro, elected by most of Venezuelans in 2018.

He did not rule out the possibility of a military intervention, contrary to the call by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to hold a dialogue between the parties in order to find a political solution.

Pompeo visited the United Nations again on February 21, and had a meeting with Guterres, amid a tense situation promoted by the United States on the Colombian-Venezuelan border.

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza also held a meeting with the UN secretary-general on Friday and met with delegations from 60 countries that joined to defend the Venezuelan sovereignty, facing the U.S. threat and interference.

Earlier this month, the United States representation at UN informed that it was preparing a draft resolution at the Security Council to try to legalize a military attack against Venezuela, under pretexts of humanitarian intervention.

If approved, this would imply ignorance of the government of Nicolas Maduro, despite the fact that the president categorically imposed himself during the May elections.

In addition to the U.S. draft resolution, Russia is drawing up a rival text, in which the need to respect the UN Charter principles such as sovereign equality, non-intervention in the internal affairs and the peaceful solution of disputes has been reiterated.
