The district attorney's office in Chiapas, Mexico confirmed the deaths of at least 25 Central American migrants Thursday after a truck flipped over on the Ixtapa-Soyalo highway near the country's border with Guatemala.

Another 29 passengers were also injured by the accident, which occurred around 6:00 p.m. local time, at the peak height of the Bombana river, some kilometers from the Fransico Sarabia neighborhood.

The Central American migrants from across several unspecified nationalities were traveling in the rear of an enclosed freight truck. The Chiapas district attorney's office indicated that investigations have already begun to establish responsibility for the tragic accident.

The migrants were entering Mexican territory through an area known as La Mesilla, where they reportedly would be transferred to the Los Altos region of Chiapas. From Los Altos, the migrants would then continued towards the center of the Chiapas to fast track to the neighboring state of Veracruz.

Each year, hundreds of Central Americans, predominantly from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala, leave their countries to flee violence and poverty in order to reach the United States in search of a better life.
