The European Union (EU) expressed concern this Friday over the Iranian decision to reduce its commitments to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a step taken by Tehran following the US withdrawal from the deal.

In July 2015, Iran, Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, China, France and Germany signed the JCPOA, which established limitations on the Iranian nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of international sanctions.

However, in 2018, Washington unilaterally withdrew from the agreement and again imposed economic and financial sanctions on Teheran.

Spokesperson for the European External Action Service, Maja Kocijancic, assured from Brussels that the EU is 'concerned that Iran will announce the third stage of reducing its commitments.'

The IRNA agency confirmed today that Tehran notified yesterday the community bloc that it will abandon all its commitments as stipulated in the JCPOA, in a message sent by Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Yavad Zarif to the European High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini.

According to the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Seyyed Abbas Musavi, the minister explained to Mogherini that the decision responds to the circumstances arising from the US withdrawal from the JCPOA and the reimposition of its sanctions against Iran.

Abbas Musavi assured that the decision also comes in the light of the inability of European signatories to comply with the commitments established both in the nuclear deal and in the resolutions of the mixed commissions. The letter stressed that the measure was adopted in accordance with Iran's rights stipulated in the agreement signed in 2015, as well as based on its paragraph 36, and represents a response to the widespread and continuing violation of the deal over the past 16 months.
