“Each day we welcome thousands of people, citizens, who are returning home and visitors, but sometimes we’ve also had cases where we’ve welcomed a new human being into this world,” Roger Maier, the CBP spokesman in Texas, told Efe on Monday in a telephone interview.

Maier said that last Saturday at 10:58 p.m. a woman identified as Ana Suez Rey, a U.S. citizen, came to the checkpoint along with another person asking for an ambulance because she was experiencing advanced labor pains.

He said that U.S. agents at the border post assisted her immediately and at 11:05 Derrick Rey was born.

Federal officials wrapped the newborn in their jackets while the paramedics arrived and after determining that both mother and child were doing fine, the pair were transported to the Big Bend Regional Medical Center where they are reported to be in perfect shape, he added.

“Sometimes women in a very advanced state of pregnancy arrive asking for help,” Maier said, adding that the work of the CBP is not only related to dealing with undocumented immigration, drug trafficking and smuggling, but sometimes officials – using the training they have been given in the matter – also have the opportunity to welcome the newest of citizens.
