Caracas, Sep 30 (Prensa Latina) Venezuela's government is reinforcing the fight against drug trafficking, having seized over 27 tons during 2019 in security operations carried out mainly on the Colombian border.

According to data from the National Anti-Drug Office (ONA), the western state of Zulia occupies first place in terms of the amount of illegal substances seized, 54.56 percent of the national total, followed by Tachira and Guarico states.

The head of the ONA, Alberto Matheus, set out that troops of the Bolivarian National Armed Forces and different State security agencies maintain a constant deployment to counteract criminal organizations that use Venezuelan territory as a bridge to send drugs from Colombia to the United States.

The authorities dismantled this week a camp and four laboratories for processing cocaine hydrochloride in the municipality of Jesus Maria Semprun, in Zulia state, where 3.5 tons of the substance were seized.

The seizure and subsequent destruction of 3,780 liters of liquid chemicals and almost four tons of solid products were also reported; in addition to the discovery of other materials and supplies used for the illicit manufacture of drugs.

In a subsequent operation, officers detained an individual carrying 150 kilograms of cocaine, distributed in 136 hidden packages in a heavy-duty vehicle in Machiques de Perija municipality, in the western demarcation.

The Bolivarian National Guard also seized 61 packages of cocaine yesterday at the Sacuima citizens' attention point, in the town of Caicara del Orinoco, in the state of Bolivar.
