Chile's National Human Rights Institution (NHRI) reported that more than 5,000 people have been arrested and 1,778 have been injured since widespread protests broke out across the country.

The data is the result of observations in 112 police stations and 61 health centers, but the NHRI noted that the number of detainees and injured people could be higher.

The report reveals as one of the most serious situations that of the number of detainees, about 549 of whom are minors.

NHRI observers recorded about 1,778 injured in hospital centers, including 146 children and youth, and of that figure, 933 suffered gunshot wounds and 519 pellet wounds, while 172 suffered from serious eye injuries and trauma, including the loss of one eye in many cases.

The NHRI report insists that the police forces have committed a series of breaches of the Protocols for the Maintenance of Public Order, such as arbitrary detentions, excessive use of force, and the use of tear gas despite the presence of older adults, children and pregnant women.
