Paris, Dec 9 (Prensa Latina) After three years of deadlock in the negotiations to end the conflict in eastern Ukraine, Paris hosts on Monday a meeting between leaders Vladimir Putin, Volodymyr Zelensky, Emmanuel Macron and Angela Merkel.

Convened by the host president, the meeting resumes the so-called Normandy Format talks (made up of Russia, Ukraine, France and Germany), which saw the last forum of heads of State and government in October 2016, to boost the materialization of the Minsk agreements, an agenda set four years ago to pave the way for an end to the crisis.

Putin and Zelensky's will to move forward has created the conditions to hold the talks, although there are many challenges to end a conflict in which about 13,000 have been killed and tens of thousands displaced.

According to official sources, the meeting will focus on aspects set out in Minsk, such as the immediate cessation of hostilities, the withdrawal of heavy weapons, Ukraine's control over borders and the autonomy of rebel regions.

In 2014, a coup d'état supported by the West overthrew Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and brought to power authorities marked by a clear anti-Russian and aggressive stance towards Donbass, where insurgents declared the independence of Donetsk and Luhansk.

Since an August meeting between Macron and Putin at Fort Bregancon, the possibility of a new summit under the so-called Normandy Format emerged, perhaps with higher hopes of success, given Zelensky's approaches and proposals to the Russian president, who has been open to dialogue.
