While 58 senators voted in favor of the resolution, two less than Thursday's vote on the Iran pact due to abstentions by presidential candidates Rand Paul and Lindsey Graham, 42 (all of them Democrats) voted against it.

After a Republican attempt last week to block the deal fell through, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell called for another round of voting Tuesday, hoping to convince at least two more Democrats to support the resolution (four Democrats back it) to reach the 60 votes needed to stop the Iran nuclear agreement from taking effect.

The White House had campaigned hard in the legislature to convince Congressmen to support the agreement between Iran and the P5+1 group (US, UK, Russia, China, France and Germany) in July.

Lawmakers have until Sept. 17 to evaluate the contents of the accord, but Obama has already warned he will use his veto if Congress passes any legislation to scotch the deal.
