The extension of the sanctions against Russia later this year is an already settled issue, said today the Polish foreign affairs minister Witold Waszczykowski, talking to journalists before meeting his EU colleagues in Brussels. The statement goes in line with the opinion of High Representative for the Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, who earlier in an interview with the German Die Welt said she also expects the sanctions to be extended.

Waszczykowski said the prolongation of the sanctions imposed on Russia by the EU in 2014, in response to the crisis in Ukraine, has been already decided by a majority of member states. Moreover, the political leaders of the US, Germany, France and Italy discussed the topic at their meeting in Hannover in Germany in April. According to the Polish minister, everyone at that meeting agreed that the Minsk agreement are not observed by Russia and therefore “the extension will be a natural process”.

Last week, Mogherini said that political leaders of member states are linking the lifting of sanctions against Russia with a full implementation of Minsk agreement. However, but this has not been achieved yet, as Moscow does not comply with the terms and conditions of the international agreement.

On May 12th the European Parliament in its resolution stated that pressure on Russia should be increased and sanctions should be extended due to the persecutions of the Crimean Tatar people in the occupied Crimea.
