Tropical Storm Ian forms in the Atlantic

MIAMI, Fla. (WFLA) – The Nationa Hurricane Center issued a public advisory for Tropical Storm Ian that has formed in the Atlantic Monday morning.

As of 11 a.m. the center of TS Ian was located near latitude 21.8 North, longitude 50.4 West. According to the NHC, Ian is moving toward the northwest near 13 miles per hour and a turn toward the north-northwest is expected over the next day or so.

The center is forecast to move over the Central Atlantic through Tuesday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 40 miles per hour with higher gusts. Little change in strength is expected during the next day or so, according to the NHC advisory, but slight strengthening is possible beginning Tuesday night.

The tropical storm is no threat to the United States, WFLA Storm Team 8 Meteorologist Ed Bloodsworth said.
